Magnitude 6.1 quake strikes off PNG coast

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea Thursday, US seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea Thursday, US seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake struck 185 kilometres east-northeast of Kandrian on New Britain island at a depth of 67 kilometres at 05:32 GMT, the US Geological Survey said.

Officials in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, more than 5,000 kilometres to the west, said there were no reports of damage on Indonesian territory.
