Nepal's beleaguered Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala scored a political victory as the Maoists withdrew their motions in the special session of Parliament on Sunday.

Nepal's beleaguered Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala scored a political victory as the Maoists withdrew their motions in the special session of Parliament on Sunday. The Maoists had demanded that Nepal be immediately declared a Republic and a fully proportional electoral system be put in place.

The Maoist had created a major political crisis since parties failed to reach a consensus. Speaker Subhas Nembang had even begun preparations for a voting on the issues. Nembang held meetings with senior political leaders, including Maoist chief Prachanda on the procedure of the meeting. After weeks of parleys, the Maoists finally decided to withdraw the demands.
