With the transport strike called by Maoists entering the third day on Thursday, vehicle movement in five districts of Nepal came to a complete standstill cutting them off from capital Kathmandu.
In Dhading, Nuwakot, Rasuwa, Chitwan and Makwanpur, neighbouring Kathmandu, all long and short distance vehicles were halted, while transport services in Narayangadh, Prithvi Highway and Tribhuvan Highway were also badly hit.
The strike that started from July 20 was called by Maoist affiliated Tamsaling Joint Struggle Committee (TJSC) to press for their demands of more rights and representation of ethnic Tamang community.
The activists have been demanding the implementation of an agreement signed on April 1, that includes declaring autonomous Tamsaling region.
TJSC cadres also reportedly torched two vehicles carrying the leading dailies of Nepal, Kantipur Post and Annapurna Post, alleging them of not publishing news of the strike. The incident occurred in Nagdhunga, the main entry point to Kathmandu.
In a separate incident two more vehicles were torched in Saptari and Siraha districts in southern Nepal by agitating ex-army men and ex-policemen, who were forced to quit their jobs during the decade long Maoist insurgency. They are demanding reinstatement.
