The study by the National Institute of Women also relates abuse and violence against women to their "passive attitude", since "they are increasingly accepting the blows, jealousies, prohibitions and harassment" by male friends, boyfriends and males in the family, Prensa Latina news agency reported.

"The situation is very serious, because it means we allow violence against women, and that can not be justified," Alejandra Barrales, a senior government official, was quoted as saying.

Barrales said when registering a case of rape, the victim's suffering is "multiplied", because not only she must face the physical and emotional consequences, but also embarrassing questions from prosecutors.

The best way to eradicate violence is to report it, he said.

The research also found out that one in five people accepted as a "natural fact" that a women are prohibited from many activities than men.

At least 15 out of 100 Mexicans prefer to spend on the education of men, because they say "in the end, women marry and it shows no sense to invest in them".
