More than 40 detained in Moscow protest: Police

Moscow police say they have detained 43 people during an anti-City Hall rally held by hundreds of activists from leftist movements.

Moscow police say they have detained 43 people during an anti-City Hall rally held by hundreds of activists from leftist movements.

Armed riot police were seen by an Associated Press photographer detaining protesters and members of a pro-Kremlin youth group there to disrupt the rally.

Hundreds gathered for Saturday's central Moscow rally in protest of what they see as excessive construction in the city and other social problems. They waved Soviet-style flags and climbed a monument to the Russian Revolution.

Spokesman Maksim Kolosvetov said those detained had committed misdemeanors such as breaking rules on protests and breaching the peace.
