"It is very bad for cricket and sports in Pakistan," he told reporters at the airport here before embarking on a visit to New Delhi.

Musharraf's remarks came three days after a group of 12 heavily-armed terrorists ambushed the Sri Lankan cricket team's bus in Lahore, leaving seven players and an assistant coach injured, and eight people dead.

Musharraf said the attack was "condemnable" and "the whole of Pakistan is ashamed that such an incident occurred here."

The former military ruler, however, said he did not want to draw comparisons between the handling of terrorism by his regime and the current Pakistan People's Party-led government.

Musharraf yesterday blasted Pakistani security forces for not reacting swiftly to the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team and taking the terrorists head-on.

"Our reaction should have been much better," Musharraf had said, adding it appeared that the security personnel assigned to guard the cricket team lacked proper training.

Musharraf left here for New Delhi this afternoon to participate in the 'India Today' conclave.
