A British parliamentarian has asked Muslim parents in the UK to take necessary steps to prevent their children from falling prey to extremism after a teenager was sentenced to two years’ detention as Britain’s “youngest terrorist”.

Terming the sentence a “wake-up” call, Shahid Malik, MP and Minister for International Development said parents have to be vigilant against the threat of radicalisation, especially via the Internet.
“It is a real wake-up call for parents because there is a real need to be vigilant, especially when their kids are on the Internet.”
The parliamentarian also called on mosques in the country to do more to combat fundamentalism. “Mosques have done a lot, but they need to do more in terms of telling young people what is acceptable and what is not in Islam,” he said.
