Japan's Finance Minister in the previous cabinet, Naoto Kan, has been chosen as the next prime minister of the world's second-largest economy, after his predecessor bowed out over the bungled handling of a US base dispute.

Japan's Finance Minister in the previous cabinet, Naoto Kan, has been chosen as the next prime minister of the world's second-largest economy, after his predecessor bowed out over the bungled handling of a US base dispute.
Kan was chosen as Japan's next prime minister by the lower house of parliament today after he won in the Democratic Party of Japan's presidential election.
