Nasheed, 41, took his oath of office at a ceremony in Male. The former political prisoner was elected in the first ever multi-party elections held in the island atoll nation.

Nasheed beat Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who had led the nation for 30 years and was Asia's longest-serving leader, in a Presidential run-off on October 28.

A host of foreign dignitaries, including India's Vice President Hamid Ansari attended the swearing in ceremony.
