UCPN (Maoist) Vice Chairman Baburam Bhattarai has asked Prime Minister Khanal to immediately resign so that a national consensus government can be formed.

Speaking at a programme on Saturday, the moderate Maoist leader said early resignation by the prime minister will pave the way for the formation of a national unity government to expedite peace process and constitution drafting.

"The prime minister himself had signed the five-point agreement that clearly demands his resignation for the formation of a national consensus government," Bhattarai pointed out.

He asked the prime minister to keep his words to resolve the current political impasse.

A national consensus government will be formed immediately after the prime minister's resignation, Bhattarai said who is also regarded as one of the most probable candidate for the post of prime minister.

"The crucial tasks of completing peace process and statute drafting have been progressing after the five-point deal. The prime minister's hesitation to resignation has halted both the tasks from gaining momentum," he said.
