Despite Pyongyang releasing two American nationals early this month, there has been no change in the US policy towards North Korea, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said.
“Our policy remains the same. Our policy is consistent,” Clinton said on Tuesday in response to a question during joint press availability with the visiting Columbia Foreign Minister at the State Department.
“We continue to offer to the North Koreans the opportunity to have a dialogue within the six-party talk framework with the United States that we think could offer many benefits to the people of North Korea,” she said.
Asserting that the choice is up to the North Koreans, Clinton said, “They know that we are committed to the goal of full and verifiable denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.”
Clinton said the Obama Administration is exploring with its six-party partners, as well as other international partners, what additional steps could be taken to begin the framework discussions once more.
“But it’s going to be up to the North Koreans to determine,” she said.
Responding to a question, she said the trip to North Korea by her husband and the former President Bill Clinton is extremely helpful as it gives the administration a window into what’s going on in North Korea.
