US officials do not believe the shooting at a Colorado movie theater that killed at least 12 people and wounded around 40 is related to terrorism, a White House official said on Friday.
"This is a local law enforcement investigation at this point, and what we can say is that we do not believe at this point that there is an apparent nexus to terrorism," said Jay Carney, spokesman for US President Barack Obama.
Carney spoke to reporters aboard a flight carrying Obama around the southern state of Florida on a campaign trip that was quickly cut short because of the shooting.
Carney said federal agents with the FBI and bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) had arrived to help local officials in Colorado.
Obama spoke soon after the shooting with Federal Bureau of Investigations chief Robert Mueller, White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew and senior counter-terrorism adviser John Brennan, Carney said.
Obama, who was in Florida as part of his re-election campaign at the time of the tragedy, will speak about the shooting from the city of Fort Myers, Florida around 1520 GMT, his campaign spokesperson Jen Psaki said.
