“In the last six months, he has held 100 fundraisers, and guess how many meetings he’s had with his jobs council. None. Zero. Zero in the last six months,” Romney said while campaigning in Bowling Green, Ohio.

A sluggish economy is Obama’s biggest vulnerability and Romney’s main focus, with unemployment stubbornly about 8%; it was 8.2% in June. The White House didn’t really have an answer. “There is no specific reason, except the president has obviously got a lot on his plate,” said press secretary Jay Carney.

That fed straight into the Romney campaign’s narrative of a president who is clueless on the economy, doesn’t like the private sector and, worse, doesn’t care.

“As president, Mitt Romney will never claim he’s too busy to focus on job creation and economic growth,” said Andrea Saul, Romney campaign spokesperson, in a statement.
