Fred Majiwa, a spokesman for St John's Ambulance Service, said on Wednesday that 35 people were rushed to the hospital with injuries following the explosion on Tuesday night along the Kisumu-Busia highway.

Majiwa says a tanker ferrying gasoline from Kisumu to Busia overturned, spilling its contents. He says some of those injured were trying to siphon the gasoline.

The incident comes less than 10 days after the deaths of more than 100 people in Kenya's capital, Nairobi, after a fire ignited while residents were attempting to collect gasoline leaking from a pipeline.
