The hour-long session was requested by Wang Lixiong, a Chinese writer and convert to Tibetan Buddhism who lives in Beijing. The two met for the online conversation at a hotel in New York.

Through an interpreter, the Tibetan spiritual leader tweeted on criticism of the Chinese government's policies in Tibet and answered questions from Chinese citizens.

"The government made these tensions, not the people," he said.

It wasn't clear how many people in China read his comments as Twitter is blocked there.

However, the service is popular among thousands of Chinese, who have found ways around the controls.
