Pakistan said Monday that the killing of Osama bin Laden in a US operation was a "major setback" to terrorist organisations around the world.
"Osama bin Laden's death illustrates the resolve of the international community, including Pakistan, to fight and eliminate terrorism," the foreign ministry said.
"It constitutes a major setback to terrorist organisations around the world," it added in a statement, saying that US forces had conducted the operation around Pakistan's northwestern town of Abbottabad early Monday.
Pakistan authorities sprung into action soon after the news broke with President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday convening emergency talks with his prime minister and security chiefs in Islamabad following US confirmation that Osama bin Laden had been killed.
The meeting between Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and the heads of "relevant departments and agencies" ended a short while ago, presidency spokesman Farhatullah Babar said.
There has been silence from the civil and military administration on the pre-dawn operation conducted in the northwestern Pakistani town of Abbottabad.
"The foreign office will issue a formal statement of the government of Pakistan on the Osama bin Laden incident," he said.
