Pak floods threaten historical sites

Several historical sites and structures are under threat of being inundated due to flood waters. The biggest threat at present is to the ancient site of Mohenjo Daro, which is situated off the River Indus, near the city of Larkana.

The biggest threat at present is to the ancient site of Mohenjo Daro, which is situated off the River Indus, near the city of Larkana. Sassui Paleejo, the culture and tourism minister for Sindh province, where the site is located, says that while her department is doing everything to prevent the Indus from entering the site, "there is a real danger this can happen any time soon."

Many historical sites that line the Indus River have been inundated. The latest casualty was the Sadhu Bela temple which is located on a diamond shaped island off Sukkur city. By Monday, only the roof tops of the island were visible to devotees.

Rajesh Kumar, the caretaker of the site says that this is the worst ever flooding he has seen in his lifetime.

Temple, Gurdwara affected

Sadhu Bela is a site for Hindu and Sikh pilgrimage. The Evacuee Trust Property Board, which looks after the religious sites of minority communities in Pakistan has more bad news.

An official of the board said that "several" temples and Gurudwaras have been inundated or washed away.

In Nowshera, the Akali Bola Singh, a Sikh holy site, was washed away last week.

At the same time, there are 300 private Hindu and Sikh places of worship.
