'Pak needs to be convinced that proxies in Afghan will lose'

The Obama Administration needs to convince Pakistan that it is not going to succeed in its effort to gain control over Afghanistan through its proxies Taliban and the Haqqani network, a South Asian expert has said.

"We know well that the Pakistanis are supporting elements of the enemy groups, both the Quetta Shura Taliban and the Haqqani network, which are, I think, those two groups the greatest threat to stability in Pakistan in Afghanistan rather," Frederick Kagan, a well known US expert on South Asia, said in a Congressional testimony.

Kagan, a Resident Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research, was testifying before the Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

"I think the key is to demonstrate to the Pakistanis, first and foremost, that the current strategy that they are using, that is destabilising Afghanistan against our interests, will fail, not that it's not desirable necessarily from their standpoint, but that it simply is impossible," Kagan said in response to a question from the members of the subcommittee.
