"He received bullets in his chest and we are operating on him to save him," Mukhtar Ahmed, a doctor at the main government hospital in the city of Peshawar, told Reuters.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack on Mian Nisar Gul, provincial minister for jails, that took place in the Darra Adam Khel region near Peshawar, where Taliban militants have been active in recent years.
