Panamanian authorities say a prominent ruling party lawmaker and son of a former vice president has died in a traffic accident.

A police statement says Tomas Altamirano Mantovani was killed when a vehicle he was riding in overturned on a highway east of the capital.
A bodyguard and another man in the car were hospitalized. The 49-year-old Altamirano was the son of former Vice President Tomas Altamirano Duque and the head of the National Assembly's Canal Affairs Commission.
TV news showed images of a visibly upset President Martin Torrijos and his foreign minister, both of whom flew by helicopter to the scene of Saturday's crash.
