Imposing moral sanctions on Iran, including its expulsion from the UN, were no less important than taking economic measures against it, Peres was quoted by Ynetnews as telling US Vice President Joe Biden during their meeting.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad cannot be a UN member and at the same time call for Israel’s annihilation and hang people in the streets, he reportedly said.

The Nobel laureate Israeli President also said that Ahmadinejad was trying to delegitimise Israel and the US, calling upon Western nations to surround the Islamic Republic with anti-missile batteries.

Biden told Peres that the Iranian regime is isolated more than ever before, both domestically and internationally, adding that the Iranian people are imposing what he called “moral sanctions against it”.

He also signed the Israeli President’s guest book writing that “the bond between the US and Israel is unshakable”.

The US leader is scheduled to meet with Mideast Quartet envoy Tony Blair tomorrow before heading to the West Bank town of Ramallah for talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.
