An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale rocked Papua New Guinea on Thursday morning, but there was no tsunami threat, Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.

The quake hit the region at 5.01 am (2201 GMT Wednesday) with the epicentre at 549 km northeast of Port Moresby and at a depth at 74 km, Xinhua reported.
