Rajapaksa meets Opposition chief for talks

President Mahinda Rajapaksa met opposition chief Ranil Wickramasinghe on Monday evening for crucial talks on constitutional reforms and abolishing Sri Lanka’s powerful executive presidency and replacing it with an executive premiership responsible to Parliament. Sutirtho Patranobis reports.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa met opposition chief and United National Party leader Ranil Wickramasinghe on Monday evening for crucial talks on constitutional reforms and abolishing Sri Lanka’s powerful executive presidency and replacing it with an executive premiership responsible to Parliament.

Reports said the two agreed on abolishing the presidency in principle, adding a committee would be appointed to look into the possibilities of creating an Executive PM’s post and another to consider the reviving of the independent commissions according to the 17th Amendment.
