Rice landed at the military Chaklala air base direct from India, where she had been on a one-day visit to show "solidarity" with New Delhi and smooth relations between nuclear-armed rivals Pakistan and India.

"I am going there (Pakistan) to talk about the Pakistani response," Rice told reporters on her way to Islamabad from India.

Asked if she was carrying any message from the Indian government, which says the Mumbai attackers came from Pakistan, Rice said: "I am going there to talk about the Pakistani response and not to carry messages."

Rice arrived in Islamabad a day after the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen flew into Pakistan.

He asked Islamabad to "investigate aggressively" any possible links that groups based in Pakistan have to the Mumbai attacks.

When asked what Mullen got out of his talks with Pakistani officials, Rice said: "He really, I think, got a sense of the commitment of the Pakistani government to the public messages that they have been issuing."
