SA registers first swine flu death: health ministry
South African health authorities on Monday announced the death of a 22-year-old student who tested positive for swine flu, the first fatal victim of the virus in sub-Saharan Africa.

South African health authorities on Monday announced the death of a 22-year-old student who tested positive for swine flu, the first fatal victim of the virus in sub-Saharan Africa.
"He died on the 28th, but there had to be some testing done to ensure the cause of death. It was the A (H1N1) influenza," said Fidel Hadebe, spokesman for the department of health.
According to the health authorities, the University of Stellenbosch student died from cardiac arrest after being admitted to hospital with pnemonia.
There had previously been no swine flu related deaths in sub-saharan Africa, according to a report released by the WHO.
