PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif on Monday secured a vote of confidence from the provincial assembly of Punjab following his election as Chief Minister of the crucial province.

PML-N leader Dost Muhammad Khosa, who served as interim Chief Minister till Shahbaz could enter the assembly through by-polls, presented the motion for the vote of confidence in the House.

After the votes were cast, Speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal Khan announced that 266 members of the 371-strong assembly had reposed confidence in Shahbaz.

Addressing the assembly soon after, Shahbaz pledged he would work to make Punjab province an example that could be emulated by others. He emphasised the need to empower women, saying they should work shoulder-to-shoulder with men for the development of Punjab.

Shahbaz, the brother of former premier Nawaz Sharif, had yesterday marked his triumphant return to the post of Chief Minister of Punjab after eight years with a call for President Pervez Musharraf to quit.

Shahbaz was ousted from the post when Musharraf led a military coup in 1999. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court this morning adjourned the hearing of a petition challenging Shahbaz's membership of the Punjab assembly till June 12.
