A Shiite pilgrim was killed and eight others were wounded in a roadside bomb blast in southern Baghdad , Iraqi medical and security sources said.

A Shiite pilgrim was killed and eight others were wounded in a roadside bomb blast in southern Baghdad on Wednesday, Iraqi medical and security sources said.

"A bomb exploded on the main road in Zaafaraniya district, killing a Shiite pilgrim and wounding eight others," a security official said, while a medic at Zaafaraniya hospital said all the casualties were men.

Shiite Muslim pilgrims travel on foot each year to the holy city of Karbala, south of the capital, for the Ashura ceremony that marks the martyrdom in 680 of Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Mohammed.

This year's anniversary falls next Monday.
