Six killed in Iraq violence

Six people were killed in Iraq today, including four in a suicide car bomb against a US army patrol, security officials said.

The attack on the US patrol occurred at around 11:00 am (0800 GMT) in the central Iraqi town of Jalawla and left 20 people wounded, an official from Diyala province's security command said.

"Four people were killed and 20 wounded in a suicide attack using a car bomb in Diyala," the official said.

The US military did not immediately comment on the attack, and it was unclear if any Americans were among the casualties.

And in the south Baghdad neighbourhood of Dora, two people were killed and nine others injured by a roadside bomb near a market, according to a police officer. Friday's unrest comes after March parliamentary elections, which have still not resulted in a new government, and ahead of parliament convening on Monday for the first time since the polls.

US and Iraqi security officials had warned that a long period of coalition formation could give insurgent groups an opportunity to further destabilise the country.
