The French economist was sacked as IMF chief after accusations that he tried to rape a New York hotel chambermaid in May this year.

He returned to France after the charges were dropped, and then escaped more accusations of trying to rape a young French journalist in his Paris flat in 2003. Police are now probing his alleged connection to an underage prostitution racket at hotels in Lille, northern France.

Until now, Sinclair, 63, had stood by her husband in the face of a damaging series of allegations.

But reports in France now suggest that Sinclair has told her friends that she has decided to leave Strauss-Kahn, the Daily Mail reported.
