"The turnout and the vote for Ahmadinejad demonstrates strong support for the way the government has conducted its policies and is a vehement 'no' to our enemies," Ahmadinejad's press advisor Ali-Akbar Javanfekr said.

According to latest results, Ahmadinejad won a clear victory in Friday's election with 64 per cent of the vote, upsetting hopes of a political comeback by his closest rival Mir Hossein Mousavi who has complained of irregularities.

"The unprecedented turnout among voters demonstrates the clear support and confidence of Iranians in the Islamic republic and in the supreme leader (Ayatollah Ali Khamenei)," Javanfekr told AFP.

He said Ahmadinejad would continue his effort to stamp out corruption, after laying accusations against powerful cleric and former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and his family during the heated election campaign.

"We hope that with the new situation there will be a serious purification within the main branches of power."
