A strong earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale hit Mexico early on Friday, but there were no immediate reports of casualties.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred at 00:42 am local time, and was cantered in the coastal state of Guerrero.

The tremor, which lasted about 40 seconds, was strongly felt in Mexico City and the nearby areas, and it caused panic as many residents fled their homes into the streets.
The quake also cut off power in parts of the city. Office workers were evacuated from some buildings in downtown areas.
In 1985, an earthquake with a Richter magnitude of 8.1 struck Mexico City, leaving 12,000 people dead, more than 20,000 injured and 80,000 homeless.
