A strong 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck northern Indonesian waters on Tuesday but there were no reports of damage and no tsunami warning was issued, geologists said.

The quake struck below the sea about 218 kilometres south of Manado, Sulawesi island, just after 1000 GMT, according to the US Geological Survey website.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a warning.
