"It was a suicide car bomb attack against a foreign forces vehicle. Four Afghan civilians have been martyred, four have been wounded," the head of the city police's criminal department Alishah Paktiawal told AFP at the scene.

"One foreign national has been slightly wounded."

The International Security Assistance Force could not immediately confirm the attack. Kabul deputy police chief Zalmai Oriakhil also said the attack was a suicide car bombing against an ISAF vehicle.

He said three people were killed, two labourers and a man who sold goods from a cart. "The wounded are all civilians working in a market in the area," he told AFP. "This is a crowded residential place." "Of course the suicide bomber has shattered into pieces."
