The incident occurred when a suicide car bomber struck a joint US and Iraqi police patrol in the neighbourhood of Mosul, killing 16 people and wounding 33 others, the source told reporters on condition of anonymity.

The source said most of the victims were policemen.

US and Iraqi security forces cordoned off the area while ambulances rushed to take the victims to nearby hospitals, it added.

The province has been the scene of a major security crackdown by US troops and Iraqi security forces, aimed at flushing out Al Qaeda militants and other anti-US insurgent groups.
