Taliban fighters attacked a police van in Pakistan's restive northwest on Monday, killing a policeman and injuring seven others, officials said.

The militants targeted the police van with rockets and automatic weapons in Hangu district of Khyber-Pakthunkhwa province.

One policeman was killed instantly.

The van from Ballyamina police station was on a routine patrol at the time of the attack.

The police station chief was among the injured, officials said.

The Taliban have carried out several attacks on the police and security forces in Hangu district in the recent past.
