The Taliban do not want Pakistan to become a modern state and the US is determined to help the country in combating the threat posed by militants, America's special envoy for Af-Pak region Richard Holbrooke has said.
The US and Pakistan are facing a common enemy and the Taliban want to harm the Pakistan government, people and democracy, Holbrooke said in an interview with Geo News channel to be broadcast tonight.
Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan chief Baitullah Mehsud, al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and Taliban commanders Maulana Fazlullah and Mullah Omar did not want Pakistan to become a modern state in accordance with the wishes of the founder of the nation but the ruling Pakistan People's Party and opposition PML-N are democratic forces, he said.
Some extremists are in Pakistan and others are in Afghanistan and they are working in coordination, Holbrooke said. The US wants to protect the Pakistani people from extremists and will continue to provide all out help to the Pakistan government, he added.
"We have a common goal but till now success could not be achieved in Afghanistan. It is a complex issue, we are providing training in Pakistan for combating terrorism. Al Qaeda and Taliban are moving to Afghanistan from Pakistan," he said.
