The incident in the bustling Mongkok district of the southern Chinese territory was not linked to the previous three acid attacks in the same area of the city, radio station RTHK reported on its website, quoting police.

In the latest attack, two people threw acid at two passers-by, the radio station said, with the liquid also splashing other shoppers.

One man has been arrested, the report said.

The Mongkok neighbourhood, a haven for shoppers after clothes and electronics, is one of the most densely populated areas in the world.

Local television showed a woman being taken on a stretcher to an ambulance with a white protective medical mask covering her whole face and bandages over her body.

Other footage from local television news showed people running from the scene of the attack in fear as police cordoned off the area and took witness statements.
