The UN chief, who arrived here from Afghanistan on Wednesday afternoon, said at a press conference that the global organisation was ready to assist Pakistan in tackling the challenges it is facing.

According to state run television, Ban said while addressing the conference with Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani that a prosperous Pakistan is in the interest of all.

He expressed grief at the kidnapping of a UN official and the slaying of his driver in Pakistan a few days ago.

Gilani said Pakistan is deeply committed to the vision and charter of the UN.

"We assure full support to the UN for its various programmes underway in different parts of the world for the cause of establishing peace," he said.
