US, China must work together on climate: Obama

US President Barack Obama called on Monday for China and the United States to work together to draft a new treaty on climate change and to chart a "low-carbon recovery" for the global economy.

US President Barack Obama called on Monday for China and the United States to work together to draft a new treaty on climate change and to chart a "low-carbon recovery" for the global economy.

Inaugurating two days of talks in Washington, Obama said that Washington and Beijing had responsibilities as the two largest producers of carbon emissions blamed for global warming.

"Together we can chart a low carbon recovery," Obama said.

"Let's be frank: neither of us profits from a growing dependence on foreign oil, nor can we spare our people from the ravages of climate change unless we cooperate," Obama said.

"Common sense calls upon us to act," he said.
