The United States on Wednesday condemned the bombings in Iraq that has killed more than 120 people and said the perpetrators would "not succeed in undermining" the country's progress towards a "peaceful and democratic future".
"The terrorists who murdered innocent civilians today will not succeed in undermining the Iraqi people's progress toward a more peaceful and democratic future," US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said.
Iraqi political leaders had underscored their resolve this week by agreeing to a new election law, she said.
"Their commitment to resolving differences through negotiation and compromise stands in sharp contrast to the senseless violence of the terrorists," Clinton said.
Vice President Joe Biden spoke to both Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, the White House said, adding he conveyed the condolences of the American people to those killed and injured in the bombings.
"The United States strongly condemns these attacks on the Iraqi people and their elected government. The perpetrators of today's bombings will not succeed," the White House said in a statement.
"The Iraqi people have repeatedly made clear they embrace a future of promise and progress, and reject extremism and destruction. The United States will stand with the Iraqis and their government as a partner and a friend as they build national unity," it added.
