The US embassy in Kabul confirmed a gun and rocket attack "in the area" of its heavily guarded compound in the Afghan capital on Tuesday but said it had suffered no casualties.

"The US embassy can confirm an attack has occurred in the area of the US embassy, including RPG (rocket-propelled grenade) and small arms fire," said spokeswoman Kerri Hannan in a statement.

"There are no casualties at this time among embassy personnel," she added.
