"An American was wounded and a Sudanese driver killed from gunshots," early on Tuesday morning, an employee with the US embassy said without specifying whether the American citizen is a diplomat.

"Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a US embassy vehicle shortly after midnight as it was driving down Road 60," in the central district of Al-Amrat, the employee said.

"We do not know who opened fire nor the motivation behind the attack," he added. The shooting incident comes as Sudanese youth were out welcoming the New Year, in celebrations that in previous years have turned violent.

On New Year's Eve, police cars patrol the streets of the city, which is home to a Christian minority, to prevent any fighting or damage to public property. Authorities in conservative Sudan consider New Year celebrations a foreign custom.
