Graham, who heads a non-governmental Christian organisation called Samaritan's Purse, arrived in the communist country in his own plane, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said.

It quoted Graham as saying after arriving in Pyongyang that he wanted "to play the role of a bridge for better relations" between the US and North Korea.

No further details were given but South Korea's Yonhap news agency said it was Graham's fourth visit to North Korea.

Graham is the son of US Baptist Billy Graham, who met the North's founding father and late president Kim Il-Sung in Pyongyang in 1992.
