The soldier was the second American fatality from grenade attacks on Thursday in Iraq.

Separately, a US Marine died on Friday as the result of a non-combat related incident, the military said in a brief statement that provided no further details.

US casualties remain sharply lower than in the past years. But the conflict continues to take a toll as the Americans face a June 30 deadline to pull back from urban areas in Iraq, the first step toward a full withdrawal by the end of 2011.

May saw 25 US troop deaths, the highest number since the same number died in September. The death toll the previous month was 19, according to an Associated Press count.

The Multi-National Corps _ Iraq soldier died late on Thursday of injuries sustained in an attack on a patrol in Diyala province, according to a military statement issued on Friday.

Friday's death announcements raised to at least 4,311 members of the US military who have died in Iraq since the war started in March 2003, according to the AP tally.
