This attack comes as part of the latest in a barrage of such strikes against al-Qaida and Taliban militants who have long sought sanctuary in the region.

The missile or missiles struck a house in North Waziristan, the area that has seen the overwhelming majority of attacks over the last two months, said the officials, who requested ananymity.

The identities of those killed was not immediately known. North Waziristan is too dangerous for outsiders to visit and independently confirm the attacks. U.S. officials do not acknowledge firing the missiles, much less discuss who they are targeting. Some locals say many of those killed are civilians; others say nearly all the victims are militants or those actively harboring them.

There have now been at least 21 suspected US missile strikes in Pakistan this month. There were 21 such attacks in September, nearly double the previous monthly record. They are fired by unmanned drones that fly over the region for hours and are equipped with extremely high-powered video cameras.
