Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell arrived in the South Korean capital late Wednesday, according to South Korea's Yonhap News Agency, amid diplomatic steps by Seoul to win support for its case before the UN Security Council against North Korea, which the South blames for the sinking.

"We're determined to show that our alliance is very firmly together during an absolutely critical period," Campbell was quoted as saying by Yonhap before he met with Foreign Minister Yu Myung Hwan.

The meeting centred around how the Security Council should respond to Seoul's request that Pyongyang be formally rebuked for the sinking of the Cheonan frigate in the Yellow Sea on March 26, which killed 46 sailors.

An examination of the salvaged wreck by an international team of investigators concluded the boat was probably sunk by a North Korean-made torpedo.
