The 62-year-old host had asked Lasko to forgive him on Monday during the opening monologue of his show saying that she was "horribly hurt" by his conduct and he will try his best to make their relationship work.

But Lasko is not sure that the chat show host is sincere because she had to force him to apologise in the first place, reported Fox News online.

"The apology was actually something coming out of Lasko rather than Letterman himself. Regina told him he better make an apology to let everyone know how sorry he was for how much he hurt and humiliated her," the source said.

Lasko had agreed that Letterman could crack a joke or two for the apology "as long as they weren't at her expense." But she was not pleased with the eventual result.

Letterman, a celebrated name on US TV, had shocked his fans by admitting last Thursday that he had relationships with the female members of his staff on the show after an extortionist threatened to go public with the whole affair.

The revelation comes as a shock as Letterman married his longtime girlfriend in March this year and they have a son, Harry, born in 2003.
