For all the grandeur it came packed in, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus, Bajirao Mastani , starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, couldn’t register a thunderous opening day on the ticket windows, collecting only Rs 12.80 crore on Friday when it was released. This, say trade analysts, could only be called a ‘decent’ collection for a film so big on hype and star value.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “#BajiraoMastani Fri ? 12.80 cr [3050 screens]. India biz. Film growing rapidly with strong word of mouth and glowing reviews.”

While the domestic figures for Dilwale , the other big release this week starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, are yet to be accounted for, the collection figures for international markets suggest Bajirao Mastani was way behind on day one.
Adarsh wrote on Twitter, “#Dilwale takes international markets by STORM... UK: Fri [Rank 2, after #StarWars] £ 218,803 [? 2.22 cr]. AWESOME! #Dilwale - AUSTRALIA: Fri [Rank 6] A$ 143,352 [? 69.33 lacs]... NEW ZEALAND: Fri [Rank 3] NZ$ 79,292 [? 35.39 lacs]. TERRIFIC!”
“#BajiraoMastani gets affected by #Dilwale wave in some intl markets... UK: Fri [Rank 7] £ 74,029 [? 73.13 lacs]. Some sites to report.#BajiraoMastani - AUS: Thu A$ 67, Fri [Rank 10] A$ 77,919. Total: A$ 77,986 [? 37.11 lacs]... NZ: Fri [Rank 7] NZ$ 15,428 [? 6.89 lacs],” he added.
Made with an estimated budget of Rs 120 crore, Bhansali’s film clearly has a lot of ground to cover and given the fact that the audience has shown almost equal interest in both the films, the revenue, too, will be divided.
On Friday, when Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani hit theatres, Taran Adarsh told IANS, “The word of mouth for Bajirao Mastani is very strong, it will gain momentum by the evening shows, but the masses are loving Dilwale. Both the films will continue to do well as we have Christmas weekend followed by New Year. It is an open ground.” He also added that the clash has hampered the screen count of both the movies, apart from dividing the audience. “Not only the audience gets divided because of the clash but also the screen and show timings. Having said that, two good films can co-exist as has happened in the past too.”
Talking about early estimates on Friday, Girish Wankhede of production-distribution company Entity One said, “Dilwale has opened to an occupancy of 70% while Bajirao Mastani opened at 30%. The opening day collection for Dilwale will be somewhere around Rs 21-22 crore.”
Manoj Desai, exhibitor and owner of G7 Cinemas (Mumbai), said both the films are doing well in his properties despite their different genres: “Both Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani opened to 100 per cent occupancy here. The shows are full and the audience response looks very promising as of now.”
Bajirao Mastani is a historical romance saga that narrates the love story of the Maratha warrior Peshwa Bajirao I and his second wife Mastani. While Ranveer and Deepika play the eponymous roles, Priyanka is seen playing Bajirao’s first wife Kashibai.
