The police on Wednesday detained a suspect in the alleged gang rape of a 19-year-old woman and the murder of her child in Manesar. The woman was allegedly raped by three men who threw her nine-month old daughter on the road, killing the infant.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed on Tuesday cracked down at several locations and detained one of the suspects from a village in IMT Manesar, 20 kms from Gurgaon, on Wednesday morning. “We have detained one suspect and are questioning him. It is yet to be confirmed if he is one of the accused” a police official said.
Late on Tuesday evening, the police also released sketches of the three accused.
Meanwhile, a woman sub-inspector of IMT Manesar police station was suspended over irregularities in handling the case. “She has been suspended based on a preliminary report by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Manesar. There were irregularities in handling the case and an inquiry has been ordered,” police PRO Manish Sehgal said. Sehgal added that the ‘irregularities’ related to “counselling the complainant and her family”. ACP Manesar Dharamveer Singh is heading the SIT.
In her complaint, the victim has mentioned that she had boarded a shared auto-rickshaw on May 29 to travel from her home in a village at Manesar to her parent’s place in Khandsa village, Gurgaon. The victim has alleged that the auto-driver diverted the vehicle and took it to a lonely place where, he along with two other passengers, took turns to rape her. Meanwhile, her infant daughter started crying and the accused flung her on the road leading to her death.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ashok Bakshi told HT that the woman had initially filed an FIR against three men for the death of her nine-month-old daughter.
Assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Manesar Dharamveer Singh, who will lead the SIT, said the woman was afraid that her husband might leave her if he came to know about the gang rape.
However, she later gathered courage and told the police about the gang rape on June 3. A medical examination was conducted on June 3 and the police are waiting for a forensic report to confirm rape.
