The Supreme Court on Tuesday convicted V K Sasikala in the 21-year-old disproportionate assets case, sending the AIADMK general secretary to prison for four years. The judgment also bars her from holding public office or contesting elections for ten years, dashing Sasikala’s hopes of becoming Tamil Nadu chief minister.
Sasikala, a close aide of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa, was named in the Rs 66 crore corruption case along with the latter. On September 27, 2014, a Special Court delivered the verdict, declaring Jayalalithaa, Sasikala, Ilavarasi and V.N. Sudhakaran guilty. While the verdict forced Jayalailthaa to step down from her post as chief minister, a Karnataka High Court acquitted all four in May 2015.
The timing of the judgment came as a blow to Sasikala who is locked in a bitter power tussle with O Panneerselvam, her main rival and former caretaker chief minister of Tamil Nadu.
